These are the areas on which I focused in my Action Research Plan:

Question: Will integrating 21st Century Skills and Tools improve student achievement on standard 4.S.1.1?

Plan: Integrate 21st Century Skills and Tools into my lesson plans for standard 4.S.1.1. Administer pre- and post tests over the standard to gauge student understanding. Use formative assessment in the classroom, over the course of the teaching and after the lesson to check understanding.

Action Research Plan

Problem / Focus Area

Standard 4.S.1.1: Interpret data from graphical representations and draw conclusions.

Factors Involved

4th Graders at Christian Center Elementary School score low on standard chosen

Questions

Timeline

1.  Administer Pretest on Graphing
2.  Graph Information
3.  Interpret Graphical Information
4.  Formative Assessment - Self Assessment, Application Cards, Conferencing
5.  Administer Posttest on Graphing - Conferencing afterwards as well.

  • Looking at Post test beside Pretest to see improvements

  • Performance Assessment throughout project

  • Observation

Data Collection Plan

Looking at the 4th grade standards in eMetrics, the current math standards

Analysis Plan

I will post both the pre and post-tests on the wiki to show results of the graphing standard for 4th Grade.  When analyzing the information, I will look at previous scores and the current scores for each student to see if any improvement was made.  I will also look at how they did as a whole group and whether what was done for graphing helped them achieve higher test scores.  In the long run, we will then look at the DakotaStep scores from this year (next fall) and determine if they really did improve from years past.

Results

According to the Achievement Series pre- and post-tests, the 4th grade students as a whole improved by 7% on their scores.  With only having a possible seven questions, there was little room for error or their scores reflected it.

Implications for Future

In completing this project, I learned that it is definitely beneficial to have the pre and post tests to help the students have an active role in their own education through looking at their initial score and then reflecting on what they’re doing in order to improve.  This will definitely be a process that I use for future classes to help address big problem areas when looking back to the DakotaStep test.
