Baseline Data

This is my process for looking at my eMetric data and determining my area of need.

  • I obtained my user id and password from my administrator. Then, I determined the largest area of need for the class by looking at the standards and where our students achieved in the 4th grade curriculum of math.  Next I chose the standard that was the largest area of need:
    • 4.S.1.1 - Use statistical models to gather, analyze and display data to draw conclusions.
  • Finally I decided on my choice because this group averages a score of 50.0 in Math and Readin on the Dakota Step testing from 3rd Grade.  This class has 5 students or 29% of their class population that participate in the school tutoring program in reading and/or math throughout the school year.  This seemed to be the class with the most need and could benefit the most with this process.

My reflection:
I looked at the eMetric scores for Christian Center Elementary in Sioux Falls, SD and determined that the 4th grade class seemed to be the most behind (looking back at 3rd grade scores from last year) and had the biggest need in the area determined based on curriculum and testing ability.  With my knowledge of these students and their abilities, I couldn't believe that graphing was their toughest area.  I assummed their area of greatest need would be in reading comprehension or maybe other math problems.

The 2008 Reading test scores indicate that Standard 4.S.1.1 was the lowest in the class.  The standard deals with 'Understanding Statistical Models (Graphing)'. I am planning to focus my lessons on the topic of graphing.
